What Is a Panoramic Radiograph?

A panoramic radiograph (also called an orthopantomogram or OPG) is a type of dental X-ray that captures a broad, panoramic view of the entire mouth in a single image. It clearly displays:

  • Both the upper and lower jaws
  • All teeth
  • Maxillary sinuses
  • Temporomandibular joints (TMJ)
  • Surrounding bone structures

When Is a Panoramic Radiograph Used in Our Clinic?

We use panoramic radiography for several key diagnostic and treatment planning purposes:

  • Assessment of impacted or hidden teeth (e.g., wisdom teeth)
  • Diagnosis of infections, cysts, tumors, or bone abnormalities
  • Treatment planning
  • Evaluation of trauma to the jaw or facial bones

Benefits of Panoramic Radiography

  • Comprehensive view: Provides a full overview of the mouth in one quick image
  • Non-invasive: No discomfort during the procedure
  • Low radiation dose: Safer for patients while still delivering detailed diagnostic information
